A horror that masters its tone

Obsession is a great horror movie that excels at getting big reactions from a packed theatre thanks to impressive and deliberately erratic tonal shifts which have the film constantly moving between being really funny, scary and properly cringe worthy. It's one of the most effective cautionary tales about being careful what you wish for that's adapted perfectly for the modern age of dating and male loneliness. It stagnates in the middle but recovers nicely by properly escalating for the unhinged finale.

Michael Johnston gives a vulnerable leading performance, making him empathetic at first as he struggles to open up so much but he quickly becomes an increasingly frustrating protagonist whose lack of urgency only makes everything worse. He always has impressive reactions too. Inde Navarrette is incredible in a role where she achieves so much flawlessly, especially her movements. She completely changes her energy in a second and remains terrifying even when obscured in darkness or other similarly creative filmmaking choices.

Writer & director Curry Barker maintains a masterful tonal grasp whilst delivering some beautifully staged scares that revel in their uncomfortable buildup for the right amount of time and the release can be just as haunting. The cinematography by Taylor Clemons prioritises precise framing and camerawork which is a natural fit for this genre. Rock Burwell's ambient score is a real highlight and a consistently stable presence when a lot of other elements are shifting throughout.

I don't get the OBSESSION!

Honestly I don't understand the hype. I felt the movie was repitive and predictable, with very little risk taken. The color was desaturated to the point it felt like a mistake. The writing was uninspired. It leaned way too hard on the in and out of reality displayed by Nikki, which was uninteresting and overdone. You could literally time a jump scare. The acting was okay, but the characters were all unrealistic. For a director's first film it was as expected, a bit messy and low budget. In regard to the hype and high ratings it makes no sense and starts to feel like a TikTok meme caught fire.

The best movie for those who love psychological horror.

I loved the fact that the film delved into loneliness, obsession, and emotional dependence, as opposed to pure jump scares. Some things were foreseeable, but the acting and the suspense were great, keeping my eyeballs in the right places all the way through. I felt the pacing was a little slow in the middle, but it picked up in the end and made up for it.

Good movie, definitely overrated

I'm usually a huge fan of what Blumhouse puts out, so when I saw their name on this I had to see the movie.

Bear's decisions throughout the movie are terrible at every turn, and 99% of the movie could have been prevented had he been given any sign of intelligence by the writers.

The whole movie can be summed as a loop of 'Nikki does thing' -> 'Bear makes a bad decision', a note which I heard the people behind me in the theater mention as they were walking out calling it a 6.5 or 7 out of 10.

The only real scare factor in the whole movie though was 'quiet scene then very loud sound effect', when well used I don't mind this as much but in one particular scene (I'm sure anyone who watched could point out) the sound effect is ridiculously loud compared to what came before, and the entirety of my group watching, as well as several of the groups around us, physically recoiled at the volume, with there additionally being generally bad sound mixing throughout the movie.

I didn't find myself creeped out more than once, and most of their attempts to do so just came off as the funny kind of bad. I couldn't tell whether I was supposed to be scared or laughing in some of the scenes, which I love comedy horrors but they didn't really commit? Awkward can be funny, but it feels like they halfheartedly parody a scene, before then seriously doing a scene in a similar fashion later. It's a bit odd.

For a (psychologically especially) horror movie to be scary, there needs to be some form of realism, and with Bear's unbelievably horrible decisions, the odd acting and sound mixing, there just was no illusion in the first place.

I'll give the movie props for being a great topic of discussion, the 5 people I watched with sat and had a debate over the parts of the movie we did and did not like, and the movie provides enough notable moments to make it a fun discussion piece between people who have seen it.

The parts of the movie I did like for their intended purpose were really good, but I feel the rest of it drags it down to somewhere around a high 6 for me, maybe a 6.5 if I had decimals, definitely worth a watch, but most people I know enjoyed it more ironically than as a horror movie. Laughing at the movie's predictability and generally unrealistic decision-making seems to be the popular way to enjoy at least in my area.

Peak Horror, one for the ages

Terrifying, horrifying, unnerving, haunting, thought provoking.

By the end of the movie, I was 51% curious about how it would end and 49% ready to run out of the theater. It pushed me right up to my limit. I was shaken for at least 20 minutes after the movie ended. The movie has occupied a considerable portion of my thoughts for days.

I don't know if I could or if I would want to ever see the movie again, but I will probably remember it to the end of my days. Can you ask for anything more from a movie?

The acting and directing really sell this movie. I think everyone leaves the movie with thoughts and questions swirling in their heads. Horror? Yes. Typical? No.

Obsession review

8/10 - Creepy, uncomfortable, and surprisingly emotional

I went into Obsession without knowing much about it, and honestly, it ended up being one of the most memorable horror movies I've seen this year. The story starts off pretty simple, with Bear wishing for the girl he likes to love him back, but things quickly become disturbing when that wish goes completely wrong. The concept is really interesting and makes you think about how dangerous it can be to try and force love instead of letting it happen naturally. (Wikipedia)

The acting was great, especially from Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette. As the movie goes on, the situation becomes more uncomfortable and intense, and both actors do a really good job of making it feel believable. There were a lot of scenes that genuinely made me feel uneasy, which is exactly what I want from a horror movie.

The movie isn't full of constant jump scares, but it creates tension really well. Some moments were hard to watch because of how awkward and disturbing they were. Overall, Obsession is a unique horror film with a strong message, great performances, and a story that sticks with you after it ends. Definitely worth watching.

What a movie.

Walking into this movie, I was really looking forward to the idea of a mentally messed up version of Romeo and Juliet walking out of the film. I can say it met expectations and blew them away. This movie hypes up the scary moments and does not fail to scare you these types of movies often don't scare me or don't entertain me, but this movie has been in my opinion the number one horror movie I've ever seen all of the jump scares unexpected kills all tie perfectly to this movie 10 out of 10. Keep making films like this!

Unexpected

Obsession is one of the first genuine surprises in a movie I've seen in really long time. It's adds creepiness and comedy and mashes it into a terrific horror film. Inde Navarrette was in her acting bag, genuinely award winning, and Curry Baker needs to be given his flowers. This is an absolute recommendation. Only downside is it can be a little slow, however it never feels like it's dragging.

Could win film of the year

9.5/10 Okay i know i might be over exaggerating for some people but damn have they done this movie good. Its insanely well written and directed the scenes were really creepy its real horror not like some horror movies that only count on gore and jump scares this is actually creepy. The sound effects are insanely good and the acting is phenomenal. I got to say this is the type of movie that i enjoyed from start to finish. This isn't always the case. I thought project Hail Mary should get movie of the year but damn after watching this, i take it all back. Its soo good. And i think one wish willow deserves a cinematic universe. I cant wait to see the next movie of curry barker cause this was amazing. 9.5/10.

Don't get it

I paid money to see this movie because of the hype. I left thinking that movies must be so bad these days if this movie is considered good. Sure, the main lead is cute and she has some whacky faces but believe it or not, that's all the movie is, over and over and over!!! The plot is ludicrous, the male characters acting is so grating and over the top, it's very repetitive with tons of loud jump scares, and when you boil it all down, what you are left with is water with a teaspoon of soup in it.

This is a good horror movie, however it's not a generational movie

This movie doesn't change the landscape on how we see horror movies. It's enjoyable from start to finish with a few suprise and shock elements here and there, but thats about it. The main actors was excellent and made the movie what it is. Obsession tells its own story, while keeping the mystique (one wish willow plot) unexplained for a potential sequel. It does it's thing, but nothing more.

Beyond sad, disturbing and incredibly engaging

This movie is well executed in a way that few movies have ever accomplished. It pulls you in, slowly and steadily. Not since Old Boy has a movie managed to elicit such an emotion. Watching this movie in a theater where a lot of younger people were laughing and being immature to being quiet...dead silent. Audience clapped afterwards. I can't say I recommend this movie. It's disturbing to the point where if you're not sure if you can handle it maybe stay away. I don't regret watching it but I'd question your sanity if you openly recommend this movie to someone.

Not bad but not that good

Overall the movie had some good acting scenes...Horror scenes and the audio video jumps were good.

However, missed almost the whole backstory of what happened and why did this happened? Which is a big part of the horror and thriller movies core. A lot of open questions with no answer (Don't want to add spoilers).

Maybe this will be justified is there's a sequel for this movie. But overall the bar for a good movie. Went down over the past years so the hype on the movie is understandable.

goated

A really good movie as it makes you paranoid of whatever Nicky is about to do, and the ambience just makes you even more anxious of what comes next, the way the movie just keeps on your seat and absolutely focused on the relationship of him and Nicky is just disgusting as well as the gore its just ugh, the greatest movie of 2026.

Victim of a Curry Baker skit

Obsession plays out as a trip inside the world of a Curry Baker skit if it's left to run untethered.

A fresh watch for any horror fan and a great flick to enjoy the laughs with friends. The film spends no time waiting to entertain then leaves you wanting more once credits roll.

An excellent display of film resource use and delivering on what horror viewers want.

Oh my god.

Genuinely the best movie I've seen in a minute! Loved it. "No no no, no no no, no no no, I thought we were having a good time", such a good quote from here and out. Also, there were parts where I thought there'd be a jump scare, but it came when i didn't expect it as much in a more abstract way. Absolute cinema.

Take notes Hollywood -

A "simple" premise with breathtaking execution. This movie had me on the edge of my seat since minute 20. It's so eery, and in ways that other modern day horror movies just cannot get right. This movie does it right - from the choreography to the simple scenes that turned uniquely dark & the way it played out beginning middle and end. Took about 20 minutes for my heart to calm down. Huge respect for everyone that took part in this movie. I do not go lightly on my 10s either. I hope the movie industry takes notes on this so we can have more like it in the future. Brilliant.
